How to Fix Broken Product Links in Shopify
September 30, 2026. Repair product URLs after a handle change, a deleted product, or a typo that shoppers keep requesting.
Product links break in a few repeatable ways. The handle changed. The product was deleted. A variant or campaign URL was shared and the path never matched a product. Someone typed winter-jaket and the live handle is winter-jacket.
Confirm the live product
In Admin, search products for the title you think they wanted. Open it and copy the handle from the search engine listing section, or from the storefront URL. The public path is /products/ plus that handle. If the product is gone and a successor exists, use the successor. If nothing is close, do not invent a match.
See whether the old path still gets visits
A changed handle with no traffic is a cleanup task, not an emergency. A changed handle that still receives Google traffic is the first redirect you should create. 404Guard lists that path with its visit count and top source. Internal referring pages tell you which collection or article still publishes the old link.
Fix both sides
- Create a redirect from the old path to the live product. How to create URL redirects in Shopify covers the Admin form.
- Edit the internal page that showed up as a source so the next click never needs the redirect.
- Check menus and automated collections if the old product was featured by handle in a link list.
Handle typos without a catalog import
You do not need to copy every product into another database. On the broken URL, suggested destinations compare the slug you were given with products you already sell. /products/winter-jaket should prefer /products/winter-jacket over a collection that happens to share a word. If the score looks wrong, search by title and pick the product yourself. The redirect is not created until you confirm it.
Leave scanner paths and one-off garbage out of this process. Bot filtering keeps them off the default list.
